"A Song of Ice and Fire (commonly abbreviated as ASoIaF) is an ongoing series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other."
"House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011-2019), it is the second television series in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik served as the showrunners for the first season. Based on parts of Martin's 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series begins about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen Conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. Featuring an ensemble cast, the show portrays the events leading up to the beginning of the decline of House Targaryen, a devastating war of succession known as the "Dance of the Dragons"."

The more I think about it, the more I hate it. Nothing makes sense in blood and cheese. They find Helaena and, knowing she has a son, settle for Jaehaerys rather than Aemond . OK, fine, but from here on it's all downhill. 1. They ask her which one is the boy. This actually ends up taking longer than just checking or killing both of them. It almost made me think of the ending of "Spartacus". 2. The fact that they could just check means Helaena's being here is redundant. The writers have cheese ask her which one is the boy just so she has something to do. 3. Cheese has this weird moment of empathy with Helaena, accepting that she is telling the truth. This is treated as profound for some reason and again, easy way to check. Also this humanity in Cheese doesn't stop him from sawning the head off a child, so the characterisation is just a mess. 4. They let Helaena leave the room while they are still working. 5. Alicent and Cole didn't think to lock the damn door.

For 2 bumbling amateur mercenaries with impersonal motivations and a tangible target to escape with, the bonus sadism of playing mind games with Helaena would waste time they already don't have and gain them nothing they have any reason to care about more than getting out alive with what they can only hope is enough to get paid.

As of the time Danaerys reaches Westeros dragons have been extinct for almost 200 years. Remember Westeros doesn't have Google they can't look stuff up. The small folk probably couldn't name a Targaryen king from 100 years ago. Scorpions could easily be long lost knowledge in some old book somewhere by the time Dany shows up.

The drawing stones for 10 stark members is a little confusing to me… Are we talking, 10 Stark loyalists/men at arms? Or are we talking 10 bonafide Stark males? Cuz if its the latter…and they do this every single year…i mean in a decade, youd have 10 adult male starks at the wall. That seems like a sizable chunk of the family

Zoolander goes to the North. #bluesteel - also, i hate when the writing makes it obvious they think the audience is dumb or cant read subtext. Like, there is no logical reason Larys should've told Alicent abt replacing her servants with his own agents. What purpose would her knowing that serve? Shed just be forced to sit there and not ever say anything, unless he just wants her to feel trapped ig? Or was that just a set up for later w the maid seeing Blood and Cheese? -also, also, Hightussy is good but I'm sure in Oldtown they call it Hopping the Tower

B&C wasn't "ruined". It's the vocal minority of purists who spent 2 years desperately trying to shape perception & sabotaging a good show for not making their sports team come off as flawless heroes & the other team as irredeemable disney villains. Yet to see a single casual reactor who was not moved. Without the book baggage this would be considered brilliant. Like Daemon mentions how Aemond is a great fighter & smirks when asked what happens if they can't find Aemond. It was obv he knew it was an impossible mission. It seems like a lot of fans can't even catch a simple subtext unless it's dumbed down & bluntly spoonfed. Some of the best parts of this ep were the political intrigue, underscoring logistics of war, the economics of blockade. Everyone paranoid & trying to sway the king. Otto & Alicent on one side but not quite together as Alicent keeps being undermined by the men in her life. Larys on the other side. Aemond & Criston on another side. These subtle political machinations are things D&D can't even dream of doing. The "farewell to peace" parallel with Rhaenyra at the funeral & Alicent at the Sept was another poignant moment. As for B&C, HOTD just plays these moments differently to GOT. Less about shock, more about creeping unease. Part of watching GoT was about watching other people reacting in horror, surprise, etc. With HOTD I don't feel the pull to watch people shouting at the screen because it would only feel forced. HOTD had so many moments in S1 where it could have gone for a sharp stab a la GoT but instead made sure to play things out slowly. It's less interested in displays of brutality & more interested in the impact on the bigger picture. GoT (& Breaking Bad) was about dramatic moments. Hotd (& Better Call Saul) is more about everything around those moments & plays them out in a way that feels slower, less brutal & more bleak & dread. GoT had so many moments where it stabbed, even if you saw the knife coming. HOTD is more interested in digging its nails & slowly pulling a wound open. All these "bring back D&D" posts just makes me know that a lot of so-called purists didn't hate GoT's cheap, gawdy, shock value spectacle writing, what they hated was their self-insert (Dany, Jon or Stannis) not sitting the throne. I LOVED the restraint on B&C. This was peak bleak, dread soaked gothic horror. The creeping horror of the haunting soundtrack with the cutting & sawing noises. The "emotional impact" the MCU brain wanted was heavy-handed head chopping gratuitous violence. But unsettling silent terror will always be more disturbing than gory theatrics & bright Bridgerton colors that some fans complain about! The book's B&C is an overly sadistic creative writing exercise of cartoon villains (makes sense considering it's made by fictional 'historians'). The extended psychological torment of Helaena strains credibility as B&C had no personal vendetta against her & were risking their own skin playing games in the Red Keep during a war. The show exchanges gore for dread, presents it as a straightforward hit, with the grim realism underscoring the urgency & perilous stakes B&C was in. The banality of evil instead of a Machiavellian plot makes it scarier. It's easy to write a woman screaming & throwing up. But the brutally real pain, terror & despair Phia managed using only her eyes is more impactful. Helaena's freeze frame reaction was on point with her cassandra character & it was devastating. The total silence surrounding b&c & its aftermath made it even more jarring. Ofc Helaena called Jaehaerys “the boy”as she was traumatized & mimicking the speech of b&c. Her offering the necklace was brilliantly upsetting & endearing cause it shows she was too sheltered to realize what b&c wanted. But then you can pinpoint the exact moment when the switch goes off. It's like she has this moment of realization about what she prolly already foresaw. A look of quiet panic & resignation sets in. You can clearly see her dissociating. she didn't even realize that she got down the stairs. The first place her feet takes her is her mother's room for comfort. To wake her up from a nightmare which was alas too real.

We have to remember that the rating is comparing HOTD and GOT episodes, as well as the book. A 7/10 is great in that regard, but the episode deserves way more praise if we compare it to other mainstream shows

It's easy to write a woman screaming & throwing up. But the brutally real, emotionally twisted human reaction Phia managed using only her eyes is more impactful. Instead of screams & thrashes you could feel the utter pain, terror & despair just by looking through her eyes without needing to see what's happening in front of her. Helaena's freeze frame reaction was on point with her cassandra coded character & it was absolutely devastating. The total silence surrounding b&c & its aftermath made it even more jarring. Ofc Helaena called Jaehaerys “the boy”. She was traumatized & mimicking the speech of b&c as we do in moments of high stress. Her "cold" reaction was her mind detaching as coping mechanism, not that she didn’t love her son. Her offering the necklace was actually brilliantly upsetting & endearing cause it hadn't yet registered with her that these ppl are for real. She's too innocent & sheltered. They drove home the point how common ratcatchers are in the palace. No one pays them any attention, the royals treat them as wallpaper. So one would assume Cheese has been inside royal quarters & has routinely seen Helaena's odd behavior & nervousness. That's how he knew she's incapable of being duplicitous. What's missing from fans is the ability to imagine characters as fully formed ppl with experiences & interiority, & then extrapolate meaning from that. You could pinpoint the exact moment when something in Helaena switches. It's like she has this moment of realization about what she prolly already foresaw & knew she couldn’t prevent. A look of quiet panic & resignation sets in. You can clearly see Helaena dissociating. She didn't even realize that she got down the stairs. When she did, the first place the little girl in her thought of was her mother's room to find comfort. Loved the camera staying anchored to her as if she couldn't perceive emotionally what's happening even as it was happening. The whole scene was filmed as if it was Helaena's nightmare, only to realize there's no waking up.

The extended psychological torment of Helaena strains credibility as B&C had no personal vendetta against her & were risking their own skin playing games in the Red Keep during a war. The show deconstructs how history is shaped by the ideological & social biases of maesters. It exchanges gore for dread, presents it as a straightforward hit, with the grim realism underscoring the urgency & perilous stakes B&C was in. This was almost scarier, as 'historians' would frame these events as a Machiavellian plot to further propaganda againt the oppostion. When in reality it’s some plebs willing to do anything for Dameon’s scraps. Which is spine chilling in a separate way & showcases the banality of evil. It's almost more sickening & unsettling even if less gory. *GoT was about brutality & shock geared for a dramatic reaction. Hotd is about building up a creeping unease of dread. GoT was about the stab, Hotd is about digging in & slowly pulling a wound open.* It's easy to write a woman screaming & throwing up. Pulling off the utter pain & psychological horror of the freeze frame reaction of a cassandra coded character who has already dissociated takes brilliance. Phia's eyes told the story. It almost felt like we were watching Helaena's nightmare.

Well, they ruined Blood&Cheese, could have been one of TV history's most haunting moments, another Red Wedding, but instead the show's version was a complete let down, rushed and underwhelming to say the least. If only they adapted the book's version which was perfection!!!! In the book Daemon gave the order to murder Aegon's heir not Aemond, a son for a son he said. Blood and Cheese sneaked into Alicent's room through the secret passageways Rhaenyra used to get out of the Red Keep in the first season, they gagged Alicent and waited. When Helaena arrived with her three babies, Blood killed her guard before proceeding to grab her eldest son, Prince Jaehaerys, while Cheese took hold of her younger son, Prince Maelor. Then she was asked on which of her sons she wanted them to kill, the queen pleaded with them to kill her instead, which was turned down and Blood reminded her that it has to be a son, warned Helaena that she and her children would die if she screamed. They threatened they would rape her baby daughter if she didn't make a choice soon. When she was once again forced to make the impossible choice under the threat that all of her children will be killed, the queen tearfully chose Maelor, the youngest son, she believed that Maelor was too young to understand. Seeing that she had chosen Maelor, Cheese whispered into the boy's ear, mockingly saying, "You hear that, little boy? Your momma wants you dead." Instead they decapitaded Jaehearys to Helaena's horror, and she began to scream. This is by far the superior Blood&Cheese version. In the show the guards had vanished, made no sense, kicking the dog was more impactful and Alicent humping Cole at the end took away from Haelena's tragedy, people were laughing. 🤦‍♀Idk, and it's not like the book readers anticipated to witness the beheading of a baby, it's just that this version of a mother's impossible choice would have made for great drama, a lost opportunity indeed I might add.
